Elizabeth McGovern
Elizabeth McGovern, born on July 18, 1961, is a versatile American actress renowned for her work across film, television, and theater. Her acting journey began while she was a student at Juilliard, where she landed a role in the acclaimed film *Ordinary People* (1980), portraying the girlfriend of Timothy Hutton's character, a troubled teenager.
After completing her studies at both Juilliard and the American Conservatory Theatre in 1981, McGovern quickly made her mark on the stage, initially performing Off-Broadway before taking on roles in prominent theaters. Her remarkable talent earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Evelyn Nesbit in *Ragtime* (1981).
In 1984, McGovern starred in Sergio Leone's ambitious gangster film *Once Upon a Time in America*, where she played Deborah Gelly, the love interest of Robert De Niro’s character. Her ability to tackle diverse roles was further demonstrated in 1989 with her performances in *Johnny Handsome*, opposite Mickey Rourke, and in *The Handmaid's Tale*, directed by Volker Schlöndorff, where she played a rebellious lesbian character.
