Carlos Rivas
Carlos Rivas, originally named Oscar Weber, was a notable Hispanic/Latin American actor whose career spanned several decades. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Lun Tha in the acclaimed musical film The King and I (1956). Rivas also featured in prominent roles such as Dirty Bob in the classic western True Grit (1969) and Hernandez in the espionage thriller Topaz (1969).
His journey in the entertainment industry began in Mexico, where he was discovered while performing in a bar. Rivas initially starred in Latin American westerns, with many of his Argentine films being shot in Mexico. His American film debut in The King and I opposite Rita Moreno marked a pivotal moment in his career, although he soon found himself taking on supporting roles. In 1956, he made an appearance as Johnny Bravo in the western series Cheyenne, and he co-starred in the science fiction films The Beast of Hollow Mountain and The Black Scorpion (both in 1956 and 1957, respectively). Rivas also portrayed Chingachgook in The Deerslayer (1957), acting alongside noted performers like Lex Barker and Forrest Tucker.
In 1970, Rivas was instrumental in the establishment of the Nosotros Foundation alongside fellow actors including Ricardo Montalban and Henry Darrow. This organization aimed to enhance the representation of Hispanic and Latin American individuals in the entertainment industry, advocating for more authentic portrayals and opportunities.
