Vernon Dobtcheff
Vernon Dobtcheff, born in Nîmes, France, to a British mother and a father of Bulgarian heritage, has enjoyed a diverse and impactful career in acting. He received his early education at Ascham Preparatory School in Eastbourne, Sussex, during the 1940s, where he distinguished himself by winning the Acting Cup.
Dobtcheff gained notable recognition in the television realm, particularly for his role as the Chief Scientist in the classic 1969 Doctor Who serial, "The War Games." His career is marked by a reputation that extends beyond his performances; he has been affectionately referred to as the "patron saint" of the acting profession. This accolade, highlighted in Rupert Everett's 2006 memoir "Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins," speaks to Dobtcheff’s remarkable ability to attend and support theatrical openings across the country, often sending well-wishing cards when unable to be present.
In addition to his extensive television work, Dobtcheff continues to contribute to the Doctor Who franchise, with a role as Shamur in the upcoming audio drama "The Children of Seth," set for release in December 2011. His charm, dedication to the arts, and unwavering support for fellow actors have solidified his status as a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.
