Kunie Tanaka (田中 邦衛 Tanaka Kunie, born November 23, 1932 - passed away March 24, 2021) was a prominent actor from Japan. He gained significant recognition for his performance in 1960 as a gangster in Akira Kurosawa's film, The Bad Sleep Well, and later collaborated with the legendary director on the film Sanjuro. Tanaka is particularly celebrated for his appearances in Kinji Fukasaku's yakuza genre films, especially the acclaimed Battles Without Honor and Humanity series. Additionally, he featured in the renowned film Kwaidan, directed by Masaki Kobayashi.

Over the course of his career, Tanaka was nominated for five Japanese Academy Awards and secured the Best Supporting Actor award in 1993 for his role in Gakko. He is also remembered for his portrayal of the lecherous character Shinjiro Ishiyama, affectionately known as Aodaishō, who serves as the primary antagonist to the hero, played by Yūzō Kayama, in the entire Wakadaishō film series. Notably, the character Kizaru from Eiichiro Oda's popular manga, One Piece, was inspired by Tanaka, highlighting his lasting influence on Japanese pop culture. His contributions to cinema have left a significant mark, and he is fondly remembered by fans and peers alike.
