June Duprez
June Duprez (14 May 1918 – 30 October 1984) was a renowned English actress known for her captivating performances in film during the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Teddington, Middlesex, England, during a World War I air raid, she was the daughter of American vaudeville artist Fred Duprez.
Duprez began her acting career as a teenager with a theatrical company, making her film debut in *The Crimson Circle* in 1936. Following this, she starred in *The Cardinal* (1936) and had a minor role in *The Spy in Black* (1938), but it was her leading role in *The Four Feathers* (1939) that catapulted her to fame. Her performance in the iconic fantasy film *The Thief of Bagdad* (1940), produced by Alexander Korda, solidified her status as a star.
Korda, recognizing her potential, attempted to transition her to Hollywood, setting a high asking price of $50,000 per film. However, Duprez struggled to gain the same popularity in America as she had in the UK. She featured in films like *Little Tokyo, U.S.A.* (1942), *Tiger Fangs* (1943), and *And Then There Were None* (1945), where she showcased her talent alongside a stellar ensemble.
After a series of films, Duprez retired from acting following her marriage to a wealthy sportsman in 1948, with whom she had two daughters. The marriage ended in divorce in 1965. She spent several years in Rome before returning to London, where she passed away at the age of 66 after a prolonged illness.
