John Carroll
John Carroll (July 17, 1906 – April 24, 1979) was a prominent American actor and singer, originally named Julian Lafaye, who was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He made his film debut with minor roles under his birth name but adopted the stage name John Carroll in 1935 when he starred in Hi, Gaucho! During the late 1930s, he became known for his performances in several Westerns, notably portraying Zorro in Zorro Rides Again in 1937. Carroll gained significant recognition as the male lead in the Marx Brothers' comedic Western, Go West, released in 1940. Perhaps his most iconic role came in 1942, when he played Woody Jason opposite John Wayne in the film Flying Tigers. Additionally, he gained acclaim for his portrayal of a Cajun soldier named "Wolf" in the 1945 comedy A Letter for Evie.
Carroll's film career was temporarily halted during World War II, as he served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps in North Africa, where he suffered a serious injury from a plane crash. After recovering, he returned to acting.
He was married to Lucille, a casting director at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), and they played a crucial role in supporting the aspiring actress Marilyn Monroe during her challenging early years in Hollywood. Although Carroll's career began to wane in the late 1950s, he left a lasting impression with a notable performance as Tate Kimbrough in the 1957 western Decision at Sundown. His final appearance on screen came in the 1974 film Ride in a Pink Car.
