Arthur Housman

Arthur Housman (October 10, 1889 – April 8, 1942) was a prominent American actor who made significant contributions to both the silent film era and the Golden Age of Hollywood. Initially recognized as a leading man, Housman transitioned into one of the most recognizable comic figures of his time, particularly known for his portrayal of a lovable drunkard in numerous films throughout the 1930s.

His most notable performances include memorable appearances in several classic Laurel and Hardy comedies, such as *Scram!*, *Our Relations*, and the title role in *The Live Ghost*. Additionally, Housman showcased his comedic talent in the Three Stooges' film *Punch Drunks*, where he played a beleaguered timekeeper, further solidifying his reputation in the realm of slapstick comedy.

Throughout his career, Housman often took on cameo roles in feature films but found more substantial opportunities in short films, where his unique brand of humor shone brightly. His career spanned over two decades, leaving an indelible mark on the comedic landscape of early cinema.

Housman passed away at the age of 52 due to pneumonia. He was married to Ellen Grubley (July 31, 1893 – May 21, 1960) from 1919 until his death, sharing a life that intertwined with the evolution of Hollywood comedy.
