Gillian Leigh Anderson OBE (born August 9, 1968) is a prominent American actress, writer, and activist. She gained widespread fame for her portrayal of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the acclaimed science fiction series The X-Files, which aired from 1993 to 2002 and was revived in 2016 and 2018. Additionally, she has delivered notable performances as Lily Bart in The House of Mirth (2000), DSI Stella Gibson in the BBC/RTÉ crime drama The Fall (2013–2016), Jean Milburn in the Netflix series Sex Education (2019–2023), and Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of The Crown (2020). Over her career, Anderson has collected two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Anderson was born in Chicago but spent her formative years in London and Grand Rapids, Michigan. She began her career in theater in New York City and soon rose to international stardom with The X-Files. Her film credits include The Mighty Celt (2005), The Last King of Scotland (2006), Shadow Dancer (2012), and Viceroy's House (2017), as well as the X-Files films Fight the Future (1998) and I Want to Believe (2008). Her television roles also feature Lady Dedlock in Bleak House (2005), Wallis Simpson in Any Human Heart (2010), and Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier on Hannibal (2013–2015).

A celebrated stage actress, Anderson has garnered accolades for her performances in works such as Absent Friends (1991) and A Doll's House (2009), where she received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. She is also known for her roles in A Streetcar Named Desire (2014 and 2016) and All About Eve (2019), earning multiple Olivier nominations and awards.
