Darío Moreno

Darío Moreno, born David Arugete on April 3, 1921, in Turkey, was a distinguished polyglot singer, composer, lyricist, and guitarist, who gained prominence in France during the 1950s and 1960s. He is particularly remembered for his hit song "Brigitte Bardot," released in 1961, which catapulted him to fame.

Moreno's early life was marked by tragedy; he lost his father, a train station worker in Aydın, to a violent incident when he was just a child. His mother placed him in the Sephardic orphanage in Izmir, where he lived until the age of four. After completing his primary education in the local Jewish schools, he juggled various odd jobs while striving to further his education, eventually working as a clerk in a law office. He also devoted his evenings to studying French at the Central Library and taught himself guitar, occasionally receiving guidance from friends.

His musical journey began at Bar Mitzva celebrations, where he quickly gained recognition within the Jewish community of Izmir. During his military service, he performed for officers, solidifying his focus on music. Following his discharge, he launched his professional career, moving to the affluent Jewish neighborhood of Karataş, where a street has since been named in his honor.

Tragically, Darío Moreno passed away from a heart attack on December 1, 1968, at the young age of 47, following a heated exchange with airport staff at Atatürk Airport. Although he wished to be buried in İzmir, he was laid to rest in Holon, Israel, by his mother, Madam Roza.
