Robert Sterling, originally named William Sterling Hart, was an American actor born on November 13, 1917, in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the renowned baseball player and umpire Bill Hart. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Sterling initially worked as a clothing salesman before setting his sights on an acting career.

In 1939, he signed with Columbia Pictures and adopted the stage name Robert Sterling to distinguish himself from the silent film western star William S. Hart. By 1941, he transitioned to MGM, where he found consistent work as a supporting actor throughout the early 1940s. Sterling's career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served as a flight instructor in the Army Air Forces. Upon his return to Hollywood, his film career began to decline, although he delivered a notable performance in the 1951 MGM film adaptation of Show Boat, portraying Steve Baker alongside Ava Gardner, who played Julie.

Despite the downturn in his film roles, Robert Sterling successfully reinvented himself on television, making numerous appearances on various shows and securing his place in the entertainment industry. He remained active in acting until his passing on May 30, 2006, leaving behind a legacy of work in both film and television.
