Roman Polanski, born on August 18, 1933, is a renowned Polish-French filmmaker, producer, writer, and actor. He was born in Paris to Polish parents but moved to Poland in 1937. After enduring the horrors of the Holocaust, Polanski pursued his education in Poland, eventually becoming a celebrated director known for both art house and mainstream films. His debut feature, Knife in the Water (1962), garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Over the years, he received five additional Oscar nominations, winning the Best Director award in 2002 for The Pianist. His impressive accolades include two BAFTAs, four Césars, a Golden Globe, and the coveted Palme d'Or.

In 1961, Polanski left Poland for France before moving to the United Kingdom, where he collaborated with Gérard Brach on films like Repulsion (1965). He relocated to the United States in 1968, solidifying his reputation with the groundbreaking horror film Rosemary's Baby, which garnered critical acclaim and an Academy Award.

Tragedy struck in 1969 when his pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson Family. Following this loss, Polanski returned to Europe, creating works such as Macbeth (1971) and Chinatown (1974), the latter earning eleven Oscar nominations. In 1977, he faced legal troubles after being charged with sexual abuse of a minor, leading him to flee to Europe. Despite controversies, he continued to produce notable films, including The Pianist, which echoed his own life experiences and won multiple awards. In 2009, he was arrested in Switzerland but was later released, declaring him a "free man."
