Ken Ogata

Ken Ogata (緒形 拳, Ogata Ken) was a distinguished Japanese actor born on July 20, 1937, in Tokyo. He left an indelible mark on the film and television industry through his remarkable performances in various celebrated works. Ogata gained international recognition for his roles in Peter Greenaway's *The Pillow Book*, Paul Schrader's *Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters*, and Shohei Imamura's *The Ballad of Narayama*. His portrayal in *Okinawan Boys* earned him the prestigious Best Actor award at the 26th Blue Ribbon Awards.

Ogata's television career flourished after he starred as Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 1965 NHK Taiga drama *Taikōki*, which skyrocketed him to fame. He continued to captivate audiences with significant roles in subsequent dramas, including his performance as Benkei in *Minamoto no Yoshitsune* the following year. He revisited the character of Fujiwara no Sumitomo in the 1976 series *Kaze to Kumo to Niji to*, and played Hideyoshi again in *Ōgon no Hibi* (1978). His role as Ōishi Kuranosuke in the 1982 adaptation of *Chūshingura* further solidified his legacy.

Ogata's final performance came shortly before his passing on October 5, 2008, in the Fuji TV drama *Kaze no Garden*, where he portrayed a doctor caring for the elderly. His legacy lives on through his sons, Kanta and Naoto Ogata, both of whom are also actors, with Naoto notably playing Oda Nobunaga in the 1992 Taiga drama *Nobunaga King of Zipangu*.
