Kyôko Kishida

Kyōko Kishida (April 29, 1930 – December 17, 2006) was a prominent Japanese actress, voice actress, and children's book author. Born into a creative family, her father Kunio Kishida was a renowned playwright and the founder of the Bungaku-za theater company. Kyōko embarked on her acting career in 1950, quickly establishing herself in the industry. A notable highlight of her stage work came in 1960 when she performed in Yukio Mishima's production of *Salome*.

With an extensive film and television career, Kishida appeared in hundreds of productions, including four Taiga drama series on NHK, where she portrayed significant historical figures such as Aguri, the wife of Asano Naganori, and Yodo-Dono, the spouse of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Her versatility was evident as she took on various roles, including acting and narrating in the popular *Ōoku* series, and she played the mother of the titular character in *Gokenin Zankurō*, featuring Ken Watanabe.

Her filmography includes critically acclaimed works like Yasujirō Ozu's *An Autumn Afternoon* (1962), Hiroshi Teshigahara's *The Woman in the Dunes* (1964), and Isao Yukisada's adaptation of Mishima's *Spring Snow* (2005). Anime enthusiasts remember her as the voice of Moomin in the 1960s series, and she provided narration for titles such as *Vampire Princess Miyu* and *Princess Tutu*. Kyōko Kishida passed away in Tokyo on December 17, 2006, due to respiratory failure linked to a brain tumor.
