Roger Delgado

Roger Delgado (1 March 1918 - 18 June 1973), whose full name was Roger Caesar Marius Bernard de Delgado Torres Castillo Roberto, was a distinguished British actor renowned as the inaugural performer to portray The Master in the iconic television series Doctor Who. Born in Whitechapel, London, to a Belgian mother and a Spanish father, Delgado spent his formative years in Bedford Park and studied at the London School of Economics before the outbreak of World War II.

During the war, he served with distinction, achieving the rank of major in both the Leicestershire Regiment and the Royal Signals, despite a personal aversion to firearms. His television career commenced in 1948, and he quickly became a familiar face in various TV shows and films, showcasing his diverse acting talents.

Delgado's legacy is particularly cemented by his role as The Master, a villainous character that became a significant part of Doctor Who lore, captivating audiences during his tenure. Tragically, his life was cut short at the age of 55 when he died in a car accident while on location for the Franco-German production La Cloche tibétaine in Turkey.

Throughout his life, Delgado was married twice: first to Olga Anthonisz, and later to Kismet Shahani, who was with him until his untimely passing. His contributions to the performing arts continue to be celebrated by fans and colleagues alike.
