Born in Waipahu, Hawaii, and raised in Spencerport, New York, Villard was the son of Diane Ruth (MacNaughton), a dedicated teacher for emotionally challenged students, and Ronald Louis Villard, a skilled photochemical engineer. After completing his education at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, he pursued his passion for acting in New York City, training at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in the 1970s. In 1980, Villard relocated to Los Angeles, where he quickly began to secure roles in both television and film, while also maintaining an active presence in theater throughout his career.

He left behind his loving family, including his parents Ron and Diane, twin brothers Timothy and Terry, sister Susan, and his long-term partner, Scott Chambliss. Villard's legacy continues to resonate within the entertainment industry.
