John Banner
John Banner, originally named Johann Banner, was born on January 28, 1910, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now part of Ukraine). Standing at 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 meters), he established himself as a notable actor, best known for his role as the comical German Sergeant Hans Schultz in the hit sitcom Hogan's Heroes, which aired from 1965 to 1971.
Banner pursued his acting dreams at the esteemed Reinhardt Seminar before making his stage debut in Vienna. However, the rise of the Nazis in 1938 forced him, a Jewish man, to flee Austria and seek refuge in the United States. Upon his arrival, he faced significant challenges in finding acting opportunities and often took on various odd jobs to support himself while he worked toward his goals. Eventually, he gained recognition in Hollywood, frequently cast in roles embodying stereotypical Germans.
His breakthrough came with Hogan's Heroes, set in a World War II German POW camp, where he portrayed Sergeant Schultz, a bumbling guard oblivious to the prisoners' sneaky antics. His iconic catchphrases "I see nothing!" and "I know nothing!" brought joy to audiences around the globe, securing his place in television history.
After the show concluded in 1971, Banner continued to appear in guest roles on television and returned to his theatrical roots. Tragically, he passed away from a heart attack on January 28, 1973, during a visit to Vienna, marking his 63rd birthday.
