Bernard Miles
Bernard James Miles, Baron Miles, CBE (27 September 1907 – 14 June 1991) was a celebrated English character actor, writer, and director, best known for his remarkable contributions to theatre. Born in Uxbridge, Middlesex, he was educated at Bishopshalt School and later Pembroke College, Oxford. Miles embarked on his theatrical journey in the 1930s, quickly transitioning into film, notably during the patriotic cinema surge of World War II. He appeared in iconic films such as *In Which We Serve* and *One of Our Aircraft Is Missing*, and had an uncredited role in *The First of the Few* (also known as *Spitfire*).
Miles was particularly renowned for his portrayal of Long John Silver in a British television adaptation of *Treasure Island*, as well as in annual performances at the Mermaid Theatre, which he established in London in 1959, marking the first new theatre in the City since the 17th century. His charming bass-baritone voice made him a sought-after figure for voice-overs, and he gained popularity through his comic monologues, often delivered in a rustic dialect.
Recognized for his artistic achievements, he was appointed a Commander of the British Empire in 1953, knighted in 1969, and given a life peerage in 1979. Miles authored several works, including *The British Theatre* and *God's Brainwave*. He passed away in Yorkshire, leaving behind a legacy enriched by his daughters, actress Sally Miles and artist Bridget Miles, and son John Miles, a former Grand Prix driver.
