Kiyoshi Atsumi
Kiyoshi Atsumi (渥美 清, Atsumi Kiyoshi), originally named Yasuo Tadokoro (田所 康雄, Tadokoro Yasuo), was born on March 10, 1928, in Tokyo and passed away on August 4, 1996, in the same city. He was a celebrated Japanese film actor whose career began in 1951 as a comedian in a strip-show theater in Asakusa. After a challenging battle with pulmonary tuberculosis lasting two years, Atsumi made his television debut in 1956, followed by his film debut in 1957. His breakthrough role came in 1963 with the film "Dear Mr. Emperor" (Haikei Tenno-Heika-Sama), where he captivated audiences with his portrayal of a charmingly naive character.
Atsumi gained national fame as the lead in the beloved Tora-san film series, commencing with "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" (translated as "It's Tough being a Man") in 1969 and continuing through to the 48th installment released in 1995, a year prior to his death. His remarkable ability to embody the endearing Tora-san character made him an iconic figure in Japanese cinema. Following his passing, many fans mourned not just Yasuo Tadokoro or Kiyoshi Atsumi, but the beloved character of Tora-san himself, whose spirit had become deeply ingrained in Japanese culture.
