Plot
In "The Reader," Michael Berg, a young German lawyer in the late 1950s, embarks on a passionate affair with an older woman named Hanna. Their relationship abruptly ends when she mysteriously vanishes. Years later, Michael encounters Hanna again, this time as a defendant in a war crimes trial for her role as a concentration camp guard during World War II. As the trial unfolds, Michael discovers Hanna's secret: she is illiterate. He grapples with the moral dilemma of whether to reveal this truth, which could impact her fate and freedom.
