Plot

In Newcastle during 1939, Joe Maddison, a shipyard laborer, grapples with feelings of inadequacy, especially after his wife departs for a younger naval officer. Feeling obsolete and barred from military service, Joe seeks purpose and, alongside his friend Harry, decides to join the Home Guard.
