Plot

Elmer is reluctant to leave Gentryville, as his heart belongs to Nellie. However, after she rejects his affections, he reluctantly agrees to join the Chicago Cubs, where he continues to dominate as a batter. Trouble brews when Nellie visits him in Chicago and witnesses a kiss between Elmer and Evelyn, leading her to sever ties with him. Distraught and angry, Elmer is lured into a gambling club, unknowingly racking up a $5,000 debt. As he grapples with his heartbreak and mounting pressure, he mysteriously vanishes just before the decisive game of the Series.
