Plot

Jesse W. Haywood, played by Don Knotts, leaves Philadelphia in 1870 with dreams of becoming a frontier dentist. Meanwhile, Penelope "Bad Penny" Cushing, portrayed by Barbara Rhoades, seeks a pardon in exchange for hunting down a gang of gun smugglers. She deceives Haywood into a fake marriage to help her cover. As fate would have it, Haywood accidentally earns the title "Doc the Haywood" when he takes down the notorious "Arnold the Kid." What follows is a blend of chaos and humor in the wild west, as Haywood navigates his new, unexpected identity.
