Plot

Sam Gifford reflects on his life as a proud cotton plantation owner in the South, married to a colonel's daughter. Mobilized as a sergeant at the war's onset, he confronts his cowardly lieutenant, leading to a violent altercation that results in his demotion to a disciplinary battalion. There, he encounters Captain Waco Grimes, another cowardly leader. Through the trials of combat, Sam forms bonds with the working-class soldiers he once looked down upon, ultimately transforming into a more compassionate and honorable individual.
