Plot
Set in late 19th-century Quebec during the colonization of the Laurentian region, the tale unfolds in the village of Sainte-Adèle. Séraphin Poudrier, a ruthless and wealthy man, wields power over the community as its mayor. When Donalda Laloge's father, unable to settle his debts, offers her hand in marriage, Séraphin seizes the opportunity. Donalda, kind-hearted and previously promised to the charming Alexis Labranche, finds herself trapped in an unloving marriage. Despite her circumstances, she strives to maintain her spirit amidst the oppressive control of her miserly husband.
