Plot
In 1902 Beijing, ambitious portrait photographer Liu Jinglun eagerly embraces modern technology when he befriends Englishman Wallace, who introduces him to cinema with a projector and short films. Their collaboration challenges Liu's loyalty to tradition and his father’s expectations, especially as he falls for Ling, the daughter of Lord Tan and a star of traditional opera. Liu views the burgeoning film industry as a pathway to wealth and securing Ling’s affection. An invitation to showcase their films for the Empress Dowager offers hope, but looming challenges raise questions about the balance between preserving tradition and embracing innovation.
