Plot
Set against a backdrop of stunning Kabuki aesthetics, a mountain village enforces a grim tradition where families escort their elderly members to Narayama to die once they reach 70 due to food shortages. Orin, nearing her seventieth birthday, is at peace with her fate, while her son Tatsuhei struggles with the impending loss and his own marriage arrangements. Meanwhile, her grandson Kesa selfishly anticipates Orin’s death, distracted by his own troubles. As the community grapples with issues of morality and survival, Orin’s unwavering love and acceptance challenge her family’s understanding of life and death.
