Plot

Karin, a commoner, unexpectedly weds the unstable King Erik XIV, ascending to the role of queen of Sweden. Erik’s advisor, Göran Persson, aims to implement a people-centric royal policy, but the king's erratic behavior creates tension with the nobility. After orchestrating the assassination of powerful nobles, Göran attempts to secure their conviction for treason. An oversight leads to their acquittal, but Göran quickly reassembles parliament to achieve his goal. As Erik grapples with guilt over the murders, he is dethroned and imprisoned, while Karin is confined to a Finnish castle, and Göran meets a grim fate.
