Plot
Set against the backdrop of post-war Poland, Lucja Krol faces unimaginable hardships after her husband dies tragically under a tram. She gives birth to their fourth son in their modest new apartment, while neighbor Wiktor, an intellectual, seeks to help but is soon imprisoned. As the Nazi threat looms, Lucja navigates the black market, allowing her sons to engage in fervent Communist discussions at home. After the war, her son Klemens is arrested under dubious charges, while Wiktor, now a party official, finds himself in peril. Tragically, Klemens endures torture in prison, his fate unknown to Lucja.
