In "October Sky," Homer Hickam envisions a life in the coal mines, following in his father's footsteps. However, everything shifts in October 1957 when the Soviet satellite Sputnik launches into orbit. Inspired by this event, Homer decides to pursue his passion for rocketry, rallying his friends and the town's science enthusiast to join him. Despite facing skepticism from the community and his father, who views their endeavors as futile, a supportive teacher encourages them to aim for the national science fair, offering a chance at college scholarships.
