Amid the turmoil of 1921 Dublin, the IRA clashes with the brutal "Black & Tans." Kerry O'Shea, an Irish-American medical student, initially seeks to remain uninvolved. However, when he rescues a wounded comrade, he finds himself entangled with the rebels, led by his former mentor Sean Lenihan, who has embraced violence as a means to an end. Complications deepen as Kerry becomes romantically involved with an English hostage, while the British propose a peace treaty that fails to appease Lenihan's ambitions for freedom. Tensions rise as loyalties and passions collide.
