William Hartnell
William Henry Hartnell (8 January 1908 – 23 April 1975), often referred to as Billy or Bill Hartnell, was a distinguished English actor renowned for originating the role of the Doctor in the iconic television series Doctor Who, which he portrayed from 1963 to 1966. Hartnell gained popularity for his earlier performances as Sergeant Grimshaw in the 1958 comedy Carry On Sergeant and as Company Sergeant Major Percy Bullimore in the sitcom The Army Game, which ran from 1957 to 1958 and again in 1960.
Hartnell began his theatrical journey in 1925, working under Frank Benson as a stagehand. He showcased his talent in numerous Shakespearean productions, including The Merchant of Venice and Hamlet. His film debut came in 1932 with Say It With Music, leading to a prolific career with over sixty film appearances. Notably, his compelling performance in This Sporting Life caught the attention of producer Verity Lambert, who subsequently cast him as the Doctor in the groundbreaking Doctor Who series.
