Plot

A small southern community is thrown into turmoil after the shocking murder of teenager Mary Clay on Confederate Decoration Day. Andrew Griffin, an aspiring politician and local attorney, views the tragedy as a potential launchpad for his Senate career. He targets Robert Hale, a northern teacher at Mary’s business school, determined to pin the crime on him despite the lack of solid evidence. Partnering with an unscrupulous reporter, Griffin ignites a fervent media campaign filled with prejudice, aiming to sway public opinion and secure Hale's conviction, regardless of the truth.
