Desperate for a "Dragon boy" to lead the family’s lion dance association, Ah Long's father is dismayed when his wife delivers three daughters instead. Ah Long, born just after midnight, is labeled a "Snake baby," intensifying his father's disappointment. Now, Mother Long fervently prays to the gods for a grandchild. Her eldest daughter, Lucy, a 48-year-old spinster, struggles to find work; the second daughter, Ah Bee, a 36-year-old gambling counselor, faces heartbreak after a recent breakup. Meanwhile, Ah Long, the youngest and only son, grapples with his fear of becoming a father. The gods ponder the fate of Mother Long's wishes.
