What starts as a minor theft investigation quickly escalates into a search for a child who was kidnapped two years ago when Maggie and PJ discover that a fingerprint on a stolen figurine matches one from a ransom note. The affluent parents of the abducted child, Helen McMurtrie, soon arrive, pressing for swift action. Helen's mother, Felicity, is particularly frantic, and when she encounters an old friend, Siobhan Kennedy, a hairdresser with a flair for the mystical, she insists the police should enlist her as a psychic. However, Siobhan declines, stating it's not her practice. The McMurtrie's offer of a $50,000 reward attracts another psychic, Magda Lupescu, who claims to be a Romanian Gypsy. With the police watching warily, Magda uses a bracelet belonging to the missing girl to conduct a psychometry session over a local map, confidently directing the Heelers to a specific location for potential evidence.
