Although British engineers constructed 40,000 miles of track throughout India, they avoided this narrow, marshy region, considering it too hazardous for development. Consequently, western India remained largely untouched until a daring Indian engineer took on the challenge. Dubbed ‘The People’s Railway,’ it was inaugurated in January 1998, bringing connectivity to remote villages.
