Episode Overview
George and Orry's bond faces a significant strain when one of the Mains' slaves escapes. Despite the tension, Orry attends George and Constance's wedding in Pennsylvania. There, a powerful address by Virgilia Hazard at an abolitionist rally pushes him to confront their deepening rifts. Meanwhile, George's mother insists he take over the family iron works, causing friction with his older brother, Stanley. Following his father's death, Orry promptly dismisses a cruel overseer. Orry also supports his cousin Charles in a duel challenge. Meanwhile, Orry's sister Ashton flirts with lawyer James Huntoon. The Mains spend the summer with the Hazards, where Charles and George's younger brother, Billy, bond over their upcoming West Point journey, though Brett develops feelings for Billy, who seems more interested in Ashton. Madeline's marriage to Justin deteriorates further as he continues to abuse her.
