This Old House (1979)
S17E10 The Salem House - 10
Episode Overview
Our host shares insights from the recent Historical Commission meeting, where the initial approval for the carriageway was put on hold for further discussion. Due to inconsistencies between the original plans and the actual house, the commissioners decided to visit the site and view a mock-up of the carriageway before voting on its suitability at a future meeting. Kevin Guinee voices his frustration over the uncertainty regarding this aspect of the project. Meanwhile, the crew is replacing the deteriorating wooden siding with a cost-effective cement-based clapboard. On the roof, roofer James Shea is busy removing and replacing broken slates, with a hundred more to tackle. He’s also switching out the old zinc hip flashing for copper, secured with brass screws. The team reviews advancements in the rebuilt kitchen shed addition, where Tom Silva has ingeniously used a keyed system of engineered beams to support the exterior wall over a large span. They also install two skylights in the structure.
