As Christmas approaches, Susan Walker, a single mother, checks in on her daughter, Lisa, while Paul Manning fine-tunes his clever robot, Tim. Lisa hatches a plan for Paul to marry her mother and decides to kidnap the robot, insisting that Paul join them for Christmas Eve at Grandma's place, where her matchmaking succeeds. Christine hires jovial Nicholas Edmund to portray Santa for the gathering. When he asks for a small advance, she borrows a ten-dollar bill from Peter, who later panics upon realizing it had a girlfriend's number written on it. Peter's bill eventually finds its way back to him after changing hands. Meanwhile, lonely teacher Agnes Simpson seeks connection and reunites with former classmate Mrs. Cabot, who shifts the employee party to Agnes's room. Room service worker Ray Follard is pressured by his aggressive brother, Pike, into participating in a burglary plot, leading to a chaotic holiday season.
