Louis has organized a grand party, but ongoing highway attacks raise alarm for Fabien, who suspects another assassination attempt on the king. Doubting Cassel, who is unwilling to join the festivities, Louis sends his alluring mistress, Athenais de Montespan, along with the unsuspecting Sophie de Clermont, to pressure Cassel into attending. Using Sophie as leverage, Athenais successfully compels Cassel to comply.
