Gimme a Break! (1981)

Episode Overview

While Nell is out having the Chief's clothes cleaned, her childhood friend Addy Wilson drops by. She introduces herself to the girls and reveals that Nell's full name is "Nellie Ruth." When Nell returns home, she feels intrigued by Addy, sensing that Addy views her as an illiterate woman whose dreams of a singing career fell through, now relegated to being a housekeeper. Motivated, Nell enrolls in night school to earn her diploma, but when she discovers Addy is her instructor, she chooses to quit. Later, Nell has a meltdown when Addy visits, but they eventually reconcile. Addy assures Nell she would never label her as illegitimate and expresses pride in who she is, encouraging Nell to return to night school to complete her education.
