When Miss Hoover assigns her class to explore their family roots, Lisa is dismayed to find that many of her ancestors were unsavory characters, including horse thieves and deadbeats. While searching through the attic, she stumbles upon a diary belonging to her ancestor, Eliza Simpson. As Lisa dives into Eliza's narrative, she uncovers that her family played a role in the Underground Railroad, aiding slaves in their quest for freedom. Eliza shares her experience of helping a slave named Virgil, but when Lisa presents her research at school, some classmates challenge her findings, igniting her resolve to clear her family’s reputation.
