Sgts. Peters and Penny catch a man loitering outside the station, poised to attack former P.C. Muswell, who left the force six months ago. Meanwhile, P.C. Jim Carver starts his CID training by joining D.S. Ted Roach for an overnight surveillance operation. However, their inexperience and relaxed approach cause them to overlook a flatbed trailer stealing a digger from a construction site. After investigating the site’s security guard, they discover he's the thief. Back at Sun Hill, D.I. Roy Galloway faces scrutiny from the Home Office for supposedly coercing a murder suspect into confession. Although cleared of any wrongdoing, Ch. Supt. Brownlow cautions him about his outdated policing methods. In an unexpected twist, P.C. Reg Hollis, during a rare patrol with W.P.C. June Ackland, manages to single-handedly apprehend an armed gunman at the Sun Hill D.H.S.S. office.
