The Bill (1984)
S04E40 The Silent Gun
Episode Overview
P.C. Haynes is called to a residence for what appears to be a standard disturbance, but he discovers a bailiff who has been shot in the hand while attempting to evict an upstairs lodger. Ch. Supt. Brownlow cancels his weekend plans to oversee the standoff, while Ch. Insp. Conway and armed officers from Sun Hill and the TSG attempt to convince the gunman to surrender, but receive no reply. When it becomes clear that the suspect is Polish rather than Irish, a translator is brought in. Still silent, the situation escalates as a local shopkeeper informs P.C. Smith that the man, Lublin, is deaf. With no chance of hearing their approach, armed police and a police dog breach the room and take him into custody. Meanwhile, residents grow frustrated at being unable to return home, and P.C. Edwards mistakenly breaks into the wrong house while trying to help a woman turn off her oven.
