Maxine takes a stand against the D.C.F. commissioner after learning that budget cuts are forcing young girls in the foster care system out of group homes and into a locked psychiatric facility, all while funds are being misallocated to beautify the commissioner's office. Meanwhile, Todd faces termination for disregarding hospital procedures to save a young boy’s hand, but Kyle defends him despite their differences. An Amish teen, who becomes pregnant during rumspringa, chooses to return to her community with her baby, leading to a custody battle when the father sues for sole rights. Amy must navigate the painful decision of whether to allow the mother to face shunning or deny the father access to his child. Worried about Maxine's deteriorating state and its impact on her job, Sean reduces her hours and encourages her to seek therapy. Additionally, Amy grows concerned about the peer pressure affecting Lauren at her public school.
