MacLeod is plagued by haunting visions of his demise, facing beheading at the hands of a shadowy figure in a dark hood. Despite Anne's pleas for him to get professional help, he turns instead to Garrick, an old friend with centuries of experience studying the mind. MacLeod recalls their encounter in the 17th Century, when he narrowly escaped being burned as a witch, unaware that Garrick had not been so fortunate. Garrick persuades MacLeod that the figure represents a collective memory shared by all Immortals and that acceptance, rather than resistance, is key to overcoming it. When MacLeod, weary and worn, confronts the specter one final time and lays down his sword, the figure lunges for his head—only for MacLeod to realize at the last moment that it’s Garrick, seeking vengeance after all those years.
