Max Blandish’s journey with television spans from the 1939 World's Fair to his current role as director of a community access station in South Bend, Indiana. Once filled with ambition, he now grapples with bitterness and emphysema, a result of poor choices and a heavy smoking habit. As he fills his programming with an array of oddities—singing cowboys, Elvis impersonators, chicken farmers, and the epitome of bad taste, "the Blue Angel"—he struggles to conceal his illness. Gloria arrives with a respirator from "Life Support," which Max vehemently denies ordering, only for his old friend Elmer to reveal otherwise. After Max storms off, Monica shares with Gloria how Max once risked his career by giving a young Japanese girl airtime, a decision that ultimately led to his firing.
