Episode Overview

After Monica abandons Gloria at a bus stop in Portland, Gloria unexpectedly gets schooled on Jewish history by three skinheads. Shortly thereafter, she encounters Sam Silverstein, a sofer who crafts Torah scrolls by hand. Sam is taken aback by Gloria's ignorance about the Holocaust and urges her to educate herself. Meanwhile, Monica secures a position as an editorial writer at the Portland Daily News, where she collaborates with Sam’s daughter, Rachel "Silver." Rachel, the paper's editorial cartoonist, faces criticism for her tame work. Monica discovers Rachel’s troubling collection of cartoons that portray her father and Judaism negatively. When Rachel invites Monica to a family dinner as her "human shield," Monica quickly realizes the deep rift between them. The next day, Rachel publishes one of her controversial cartoons, and her panel, “Chutzpah!,” becomes a sensation in Portland.
