Episode Overview

Miners gather outside Loren Bray's store to protest his refusal to extend credit to those on strike and his dealings with the mine owners. Conrad, an emerging union leader, attempts to rally the workers. Meanwhile, Travis Stone, the mining boss, arrives and distributes flyers seeking scabs. In a fit of anger, a miner hurls a stick of dynamite onto Loren's porch, leading to chaos as Sully gets knocked out while trying to extinguish the fire. Matthew picks up a flyer and decides to accept the scab job to cover his homestead expenses, which puts him at odds with Sully and Mike, who urge him to reconsider. Grace confronts Loren, vowing not to purchase anything from him until the strike concludes, criticizing his unfair practices. Matthew soon discovers that Loren charges a hefty fee for the miners’ credit, adding to his frustration. Later, Mike offers Brian some bicarbonate of soda to help with his discomfort.
