In July 1931, the Chicago Sports Arena was just another boxing venue amid countless others in America, a gritty place where young fighters from reform schools and rundown neighborhoods put everything on the line in hopes of escaping the grip of poverty. While these aspiring boxers bled in the ring, they saw only a fraction of the earnings, as the real profits flowed into the hands of the gangsters pulling the strings behind the scenes.
