On a rainy night in New York City, July 23, 1934, the Underworld is eager to seize a groundbreaking invention—the racewire, which promises to deliver horse racing results to bookmakers in record time. Michael Barrigan and Frederic Withers, who co-manage the Trans-Pacific News Service with their partner Douglas Barrows, receive a frantic call from Barrows. However, when Barrigan arrives at the bookie establishment located in the back of Hayes Florists, he discovers a shocking scene: Barrows has been murdered.
